The term 'geographic information system (gis)' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' A system for archiving, retrieving, and manipulating data that has been stored and indexed according to the geographic coordinates of its elements. The system generally can utilize a variety of data types, such as imagery, maps. table, etc'.

The term 'geographic information system (gis)' as it applies to the area of hazardous materials can be defined as 'A mapping system that uses computers to collect, store, manipulate, analyze, and display data. For example, GIS can show the concentration of a contaminant within a community in relation to points of reference such as streets and homes'.

The term 'geographic information system (gis)' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a system of spatially referenced information, including computer programs that acquire, store, manipulate, analyze, and display spatial data'.
